Developed by and for NFCYM members, The Church Is Our Home equips ministry leaders with the foundation for true cultural competency in diverse church settings. Inspired by Servant of God Sr. Thea Bowman’s 1989 address to the U.S. bishops, this four-part training blends knowledge, conversation, exposure, and practical application to help participants understand their own identities, those they serve, and the barriers to evangelization.

Sessions 1 and 2 will take place in person at the 2025 NCYC on Friday, November 21, and Saturday, November 22, from 11:45 a.m.–1:45 p.m. Sessions 3 and 4 will be held virtually in December via Zoom. Participants must commit to attending all four sessions.

Faith is never meant to stay behind church doors. Our encounters with Christ are meant to move us—changing how we live, how we love, and how we lead others to Him. This session invites ministry leaders to reflect on how moments of grace can shape a community ready to share the Gospel. Through inspiring stories, practical strategies, and a renewed sense of mission, we will explore how to form disciples who are not just filled but also sent. When we live out of a deep relationship with Christ, our ministry naturally overflows, reaching hearts far beyond Sunday.

It can be difficult to know what to say to someone when they identify themselves as a sexual or gender minority (LGBTQ). The goal of this session is to help us understand what the Church teaches on human sexuality and how we are called to live in God’s love and truth. We will also learn how to share this teaching in a way that cares for the person in front of us and to invite them to live lives of faith in Jesus Christ.

Through engaging storytelling, dynamic characterizations, and faith-filled music, Doug and Dave bring to life the mystery of the Body of Christ in a way that will inspire and uplift. When teens are asked what they want adults in the Church to know about their faith journey, the top answer is simple: “I want them to know how hard I’m trying.” We see you. We see your effort, your desire to follow Christ and the real struggles that come with it. In this honest and supportive session we’ll talk about three common roadblocks that make living your faith tough: friends who pull you away, falling into the same sins, and feeling like two different people at church and school. Come find encouragement, practical tools and hope to keep going strong in your walk with Christ.

You hear people talk about loving Scripture and you want to love it–you really do–but every time you open your Bible you get tangled up in names you can’t pronounce and rules you don’t understand. Or you go for the tried-and-true and open up to a gospel only to find that the story feels so familiar that you just end up skimming. Is it time to give up on the Bible? Join Meg Hunter-Kilmer as she breaks open the word of God for you, showing you the power of Scripture (and giving you some tips for how to get started yourself).

We’ve all been there. Family can be the greatest blessing and the greatest challenge, sometimes in the same five minutes! If you’ve ever felt like your family is a little… chaotic (okay, maybe a lot), you’re not alone. In this lively and hope-filled session, Chris Padgett shares real-life stories, laugh-out-loud moments, and down-to-earth wisdom to help you find peace and holiness in the middle of family drama. You’ll walk away with practical tools to respond with love (even when it’s hard), strengthen your relationships, and grow in virtue. Because yes, it is possible to become a saint, even in the craziest family in the world.

Have you ever been told that you need a prayer life but don’t know where to start or what to do? In this session, you’ll be given practical, hands on ways to start a daily, lived relationship with Jesus through prayer, especially with praying with Scripture so what’s learned this week doesn’t just stay in Indianapolis!

Presented by: Ali Hoffman

What is it that the world needs right now? Many would say peace, hope, love, kindness, compassion. And while these are all good things, we keep missing the mark. What is needed more than anything right now is FAITH, and this can be lost! Unfortunately, as a society, we have overlooked what is most important: our relationship with God. During this session, if you want a “boost in faith” and you want to recommit your attention to the LORD, come and join us. WARNING:  This is not for the faint of heart or for those who DO NOT want to hear the TRUTH!

Presented by: Bishop Joseph A. Espaillat

It is easy to feel paralyzed by everything that has to get done, both big and small. Sr. Mercedes explores some of the daily influences keeping us in this space of indecision, which keeps us from recognizing who we are called to be as children of God the Father. Sister will show how we can embrace the graces and circumstances of the given moment to better encounter Christ and be built-up in His love for us.

Presented by: Sr. Mercedes Torres, OP

Pornography is one of the most widespread and damaging challenges facing families and communities today. Parents, clergy and ministry leaders are on the front lines, often unsure how to respond or where to start. In this practical and compassionate session you’ll learn how serious this issue really is and gain clear tools to address it with courage and care. Together we’ll explore how to talk about pornography with young people, how to offer support when someone struggles and how the Church can lead with both truth and mercy.

Ministry is a beautiful calling…but let’s be honest, it’s also hard. Long hours, constant expectations, and the pressure to always be “on” can leave even the most faithful leaders running on empty. If you’ve ever felt worn out, discouraged, or wondered if you can really keep going, you’re not alone.

In this honest and hope-filled session, Christopher Wesley opens up about nearly burning out after 20 years in parish ministry and what helped him rediscover joy in serving. Through real stories and candid conversation, we’ll talk about the challenges many ministry leaders face, why some walk away, and what inspires others to stay.

You’ll walk away feeling seen, encouraged, and equipped with practical ways to care for your soul and your call—so you can not only survive in ministry, but truly thrive in it.

Round C & F

Your anxiety, depression, learning difference, or diagnosis doesn’t define you. Neither do your talents, grades, popularity, or secrets. God sees so much more in you, and for you. Sometimes, we just need help seeing ourselves the way He does. Leah and her mom, Cathy, will share their journey through anxiety, a dyslexia diagnosis, and other family changes, and how they learned to see themselves—and each other—through God’s eyes. Along the way, they discovered helpful coping strategies, found strength in their parish community, and built stronger relationships with one another and with God through prayer and the sacraments. They’ll share practical tools and hard-won wisdom so you can discover hope, healing, and the truth of whose you really are.

Presented by: Cathy Becker and Leah B.

In popular culture, marriage is portrayed as temporary, restrictive, and contractual. A cinematic and emotional end is romanticized in media but there’s a bigger story to be told here. The Sacrament of Marriage is the beginning of a joy that far surpasses anything that can be captured in the verse of a song, page of a book, reel or movie screen. It’s an extraordinary vocation and the normative way to holiness. Using theology, philosophy and lived experience, learn why marriage is beautiful, joyful and a very real opportunity to pursue the will of God in every day life.

Presented by: Deacon Jason Bulman and Rachel Bulman

If God holds the keys to heaven, wouldn’t you want to get to know Him? This topic delves into the significance of prayer in deepening one’s relationship with God. We’ll discuss different forms of prayer, the role of prayer in personal and communal life, and how it can transform your spiritual journey. Practical tips and personal stories will highlight how consistent, heartfelt prayer can bring about profound changes.

In a world filled with pressure, pain, and uncertainty, Jesus invites us to let go and trust Him completely. This session will explore what it means to practice radical abandonment in Christ, allowing His love to heal our wounds and renew our hearts. Through reflection, prayer, and real-life witness, youth will discover that true freedom and peace come when we surrender everything into God’s hands.

Presented by: Dr. Alex Gotay

Teenagers are in the midst of discovering who they are and who they hope to become. Research shows that when young people understand their identity in Christ, they are far more likely to stay engaged in their faith into adulthood. As ministry leaders, we have the opportunity to help teens root their identity in Jesus through intentional spiritual practices. This session will explore why identity formation is central to youth ministry, introduce key principles for integrating spiritual practices, and offer practical examples that resonate with today’s young Church.

Presented by: Shannon Schmidt

We will explore global trends in the mental health of young people in a data-driven way, diving into areas such as resilience, concentration and creativity. Hearing from young people themselves we will examine what are some of the causes of the huge increase in poor mental health and wellbeing. We will then deep dive into the riches the Catholic faith has to offer the conversation. Through the lives of the saints and scripture, through art and community, we will unwrap how practices and concepts that we may take for granted as part of a lived life of faith, may well be the key to vastly improve the wellness of the young people we serve.

Presented by: Rebecca Roseman

We remember the ones who stayed: the adults who showed up when it wasn’t easy, who asked good questions, and who called us to greatness. In this session, Chenele Shaw explores what makes an adult unforgettable in the life of a young person. Drawing from her own journey and years of experience in youth ministry, she offers a vision for accompaniment rooted not in perfection but in presence. Through humor, vulnerability, and practical tools, participants will be reminded that you do not have to be cool or have everything figured out; you just have to be there. If you have ever wondered whether your role in a young person’s life really matters, this talk will renew your hope and purpose.
