One of the most common and understandable fears regarding vocational discernment is the question, “What if I get it wrong?” or “What if I realize it’s not for me?” Many men and women feel called to the priesthood and religious life, but the anxiety of possibly wasting years of their lives, letting people down, or even worse, ending up in the wrong vocation completely stops them from answering this call. In this session, Thomas Lyons will share some key tips for confident discernment based on his years of vocational promotion, interviews with priests and religious about these very questions, and his own experience of feeling called to marriage after almost five years in the seminary.

When you look around, there’s always someone better looking than you, smarter than you, more popular than you, more athletic than you. How on earth can you believe that you’re good when there always seems to be someone better? And if you love yourself, how do you keep from looking down on other people? We’ll look at a Saint who fought Nazis, a Saint who coached soccer, and a Saint who spent thirty years addicted to opium–and never got clean–as we try to believe that Jesus really does love us exactly as we are.

It has been argued that there is no longer a monolithic “youth culture” anymore. Gone are the days when we did things one way because it “worked for everyone.” If that is true, why do we still only present youth with monolithic youth ministries? In this session, Annie Grandell will present a case for the need for the Church to build up more adults to mentor young people in smaller groups, providing formation that is customized to their needs and their questions while still holding true to the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church.
